Norfolk Broads

The Norfolk Broads are a large area of waterways in the east of England, which were designated as a national park in 1988. Although most of the Broads are in Norfolk, some of the 120 miles of waterways lie in the neighbouring county of Suffolk. The Broads are one of the most important areas of Norfolk both in terms of ecological importance and as a tourist attraction, and thousands of visitors come to the county each year to holiday parks in the uk or go bird watching on the Broads.

The Broads were formed as far back as medieval times, when extensive peat cutting for fuel created deep channels which eventually flooded with water. In later times the natural rivers were extended into the Broads, creating a vast network of rivers and water channels which were used for transporting goods and people around the county and out to sea. Nowadays, most people using the Broads are either holiday makers who have hired a boat from a boat hire company such as Richardsons Boats, or locals who have a small pleasure craft which they use at weekends to explore the area. All types of boats are found on the Broads, from high powered speedboats to yachts. There are no locks to be navigated on the Broads as the area is so flat, making it a suitable holiday for even novice sailors. Reputable companies such as Richardsons Boats will give their clients full training before letting them loose on the water.

The Norfolk Broads are an important area for wildlife, and many people come to the Broads each year to see the abundance of different species. Birds are among the most important visitors to the Broads, attracted by the unique wetland environment. Butterflies and insects such as dragonflies make their home in the wetlands of the Broads and the area is also home to several unusual species of flowers and plants.

Many of the attractions on the Broads can be visited by boat and there are often mooring points to leave your boat while visiting the attraction. Wroxham is one of the main towns on the Broads and during the summer it is extremely popular with visitors. It’s the best place on the Broads to stock up with essential provisions and do some shopping for holiday essentials. There are several attractive stately homes and houses open for viewing and also attractions for the children such as zoos and gardens. There are historical sites such as churches and windmills up and down the length of the broads, and with every turn of the corner young will come across another interesting village, building or pub where you can moor the boat and watch the world go by.
